OS X Lion and LightSpeed 3.5

OS X Lion and LightSpeed 3.5

Happy Lion Day!

Today, Apple announced the next generation of the Mac operating system nicknamed "Lion", or "Mac OS X [pronounced Ten] 10.7 Lion" in the formal phrase.

Many of our clients have inquired about LightSpeed compatibility with Lion, and we are happy to announce that LightSpeed 3.5 is compatible with the new kitty.

The process to upgrade involves a few steps, so we are offering a service titled Safe and Easy Upgrade to LightSpeed 3.5 and Lion. Please click through for more information.

Benefits of Lion including new disaster recovery after the break...

We'll be testing 10.7 for a week or so, using it thoroughly with LightSpeed, POS hardware, and other common applications, and will hopefully give the green light to start upgrading clients at that point. Sometimes it is valuable to wait for 10.7.1, but we're hoping Apple got it right from the start with Lion.

The new Mac OS X 10.7 Lion includes some exciting functionality:

  • Multi-Touch Gestures
  • Launchpad
  • Full-Screen Apps
  • Auto Save and Versions
  • Resume
  • AirDrop
  • Mail & iCal
One other feature announced today promises to be huge in the areas of Business Continuity and Disaster recovery for retailers. Lion Recovery is a new technology which allows you to reinstall or repair Mac OS X without needing an installation disc.
While this feature isn't new to competing operating systems, one element of it called Internet Recovery is brand new. This feature is currently available on the brand new MacBook Air and Mac Mini (announced today) and will let you recover even in the event your hard drive has failed! All you need is an internet connection.
When retail store owners looking at Mac POS ask us "how quickly can I recover from a failure", we're happy to say we can now add Lion Recovery to our list of tools that includes Clone Booting, Target Disk Mode, and Cloud Backups.
